Let us offer some suggestions & tips on choosing the right toys for your bird and assuring their safety and happiness.
Birds need toys for a variety of reasons. To stimulate them, to keep them from plucking themselves, to keep them from getting bored, exercise and to help keep their beaks trim..
Buy toys to fit the birds size and activity level. Most parrots prefer bright colors especially orange. Pink is a comfort color and has a soothing effect on parrots partly because it is similar to our flesh tones at hand feeding or their parents throat color. Nearly all parrots prefer toys that show the display colors of their species.
Birds will generally prefer soft woods as this imitates their natural environment more so and it's important to encourage them to chew, by using thinner, softer pieces of wood.
Toy placement is very important in the cage and can either encourage or discourage their play activity. Watch to see if your parrot uses her right or left foot and hang the their toy on the corresponding side to encourage activity. Provide places to "hide" for your bird which gives a sense of security but be mindful not to place them right in the middle of the cage at the top as this is their place of dominance.
If your bird is afraid or reluctant to go near their new toy, try hanging it on the lowest part of the cage, out of the way, where they can watch and "investigate" it at their own pace. Some birds may take a couple of days to approach a new toy so you must give them time to feel secure with it.
Parrots need aggression release toys. Toys that can be beat up, swung on & used for that "pent up" energy are very important.
Rotate your birds toys regularly! Not only does this keep your bird from getting bored but it helps keep the toy from getting destroyed quite so quickly. It's recommended that toys be rotated every 5-7 days.
Several of the wood toys we sell are handmade by us. The other wood toys we carry are from the finest toy makers in the industry and have our own bird's "beak of approval"! These toys are made with woods that are colored with FDA approved non toxic coloring, vegetable tanned leather, 100% natural cotton rope, marbella beads and other safe plastics, untreated woods & untreated rawhide chews. Our wood toys have all been pre-tested on our own birds for several weeks to assure the quality & safety of the toys.
The wood toys are designed to be destroyed! We've heard people say "We don't give our bird toys because he just chews them"! They need to chew, especially cockatoos & macaws and to deny them this natural behavior is cruel. Place other toys in their cages & on their trees/gyms that they can't destroy as easily which will not only encourage challenging their minds & beaks but will also save on your monthly toy bill!
